Farm Antics: Riding horses, chasing chickens, and digging for potatoes

So, this is where my husband's parents live.

It's a 60 acre farm where they keep horses, chickens, basset hounds, cows, and some koi.
And also potatoes.

Our kids just adore going out to Grandma & Grandpa's farm. I can't say I blame them. Some of my best childhood memories are from visiting my grandparent's home in Evergreen and riding their horses. The views are gorgeous.

We went out yesterday because the girls were promised a horse ride.

Why did the chickens cross the road?
DSC_1207
To get away from the ginger child, of course.

The horses were out in the pasture, so they had to go get them.

I stayed back...

...to smell the roses...

...and maybe my baby also.

The girls took turns riding Pepper Ann.

I'm sort of in love with this photo above. DSC_1260
Pepper Ann is Grandma's sweetest horse, an older one they got with the grandkids in mind.

Violet was fearless.

They each got a couple turns around the pasture.

Maybe some riding lessons are in their future...?

Of course, we'll need another helmet.

Then it was Daddy & Grandma's turn. Grandma rode Edie, though their ride was short because Edie wasn't really in a good mood.

The girls had a bit of a hard time watching from afar.

Though they were easily distracted with a good game of tag with the chickens. {Poor chickens.}

Last thing to do before supper was to head to the garden...
DSC_1328
...to pick potatoes with Grandpa.
DSC_1333
Potatoes are fun to harvest! They grow under ground so it's like an Easter egg hunt looking for them.
DSC_1345
They had a blast hunting for potatoes, and we got to take our finds home. {Justin and I have agreed to grow potatoes next year.}

Time to head inside for dinner!

Can you see why we enjoy coming out here?

Thanks for having us out, Grandma & Grandpa & Pepper Ann!
It was such a lovely way to spend our day.

Oh, and in case that wasn't enough photos for you
{ahem, grandmas} you can see a "few" more here

Cheers,
Heather

  1. How did you ever manage to leave that paradise? We live in the country too and I wouldn't trade it for the world. My absolute best childhood memories are spending every weekend out at my grandparents farm. You are so lucky to be able to give you babies those memories :-)

    1. Andrea, I love your blog! Thanks for visiting mine :)

We're in Denver, this is my in-law's home out about an hour south east from the city. Despite being further toward the plains, they are about 1,000 feet higher in elevation than us!

  3. Such a beautiful place and so peaceful! You are fortunate to have that to take your kids to. I grew up on a farm in northwest Missouri and there is nothing better than the simplicity of country life!
